Best for

  • Teams already standardized on GitHub for source control and CI
  • JetBrains, Neovim, or Xcode users (where Cursor and Windsurf cannot reach)
  • Org buyers who need SSO, audit, and IP indemnification

Weak at

  • Latest-and-greatest features — competitors typically ship first
  • Composer-style multi-file edits (improving but still trails Cursor)

Pricing

Tier Price Notes
Free $0 / month Limited monthly completions and chat messages
Pro $10 / month Unlimited completions, chat, agent mode
Business $19 / seat Org-level admin and policy
Enterprise $39 / seat Knowledge bases, fine-grained policies

What it is

GitHub Copilot is Microsoft/GitHub’s AI pair programmer. It started as inline completion in VS Code and has expanded into chat, agent mode, and code-review automation across most major editors.

What it does well

Distribution and pricing. At $10/mo for Pro, with model choice including Claude Sonnet, GPT-5, and Gemini, it’s the broadest base case. The JetBrains and Xcode plugins are first-class, which Cursor and Windsurf cannot match.

For organizations, the indemnification, audit logging, and policy controls are a meaningful procurement advantage.

Where it falls short

Frontier features tend to ship in Cursor, Windsurf, or Claude Code first. If you want the bleeding edge, this is rarely the right tool.

Verdict

The safest enterprise pick. Best price-to-feature ratio at the individual Pro tier ($10/mo). Will not be the most capable tool on any given week, but rarely the worst.
