Best for

  • Regulated or privacy-sensitive teams (zero data retention, IP indemnification)
  • Enterprises that need IDE coverage beyond VS Code (JetBrains, Vim, etc.)
  • Buyers who care that the model wasn't trained on copyleft code

Weak at

  • Per-seat pricing is the highest in the category at $39–59
  • Frontier features ship in Cursor / Copilot / Claude Code first

Pricing

Tier Price Notes
Dev Preview (free) $0 / month Basic completions and foundational agents — limited
Code Assistant $39 / seat Intelligent completion + full SDLC chat
Agentic Platform $59 / seat AI agent workflows + MCP tool integration
Enterprise Custom / seat IP indemnification, private models, SSO, audit

What it is

Tabnine is one of the original AI coding assistants, originally focused on inline completion and now expanded into chat, agents, and MCP-driven tool integration. Its differentiation is privacy and provenance: it doesn’t train on your code, never stores it, and offers IP indemnification at the enterprise tier.

What it does well

The compliance story is real and matters in regulated industries. IDE breadth is strong — VS Code, JetBrains, Neovim, and a browser surface are all first-class. The Tabnine Protected model is trained on permissively-licensed code only, addressing a procurement concern that larger orgs care about.

Where it falls short

Pricing is significantly higher than competitors at the per-seat level. For an individual developer, the same money buys Cursor Pro plus another tool. Capability lags: features that show up in Cursor or Claude Code arrive later in Tabnine.

Verdict

Pay this much only if compliance, privacy, or IP indemnification are real procurement requirements. For most individual developers, the value is in Pro-tier Copilot ($10) or Cursor ($20). Tabnine's edge is the enterprise governance story, not raw capability per dollar.
